For the second time in 2013 Bobby Santos was in victory lane at the end of a NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour race. This time it was on Thursday night when he won at Thompson Speedway in the Budweiser King of Beers 150 which actually ended up being 158 laps after two green-white-checkered finishes.
He started the race from the pole but was challenged during the race falling from the lead for the first time on lap 112 when Todd Szegedy took the lead. Justin Bonsignore then took the top spot from Szegedy on lap 116. He led for 18 laps until Santos made the pass to retake the lead on lap 135 of the scheduled 150.
A caution on lap 148 forced the first green-white-checkered attempt and then another on lap 153 forced the second attempt. Santos was able to hold off a challenge from Donny Lia who finished second.
Eric Goodale finished third, Doug Coby fourth, Woody Pitkat fifth, Ron Silk sixth, Jimmy Blewett seventh, Jamie Tamaino eighth, Todd Szegedy ninth, and Ron Yuhas Jr rounded out the top 10. Mike Stefanik finished 11th and Ed Flemke Jr was 12th. The last car on the lead lap was points leader Ryan Preece. He spun out on the final lap. Justin Bonsignore finished 20th in the 27 car field after having electrical issues late.
Ryan Preece's points lead is now down to 14 points over Doug Coby after nine of the 14 races. Rowan Pennink is third and is 44 points back. Mike Stefanik is fourth and Donny Lia fifth. Bobby Santos is 14th in points now. He has only started seven of the nine races.
Next up is a combination race with the NASCAR Whelen Modied Tour and the NASCAR Whelen Southern Modified Tour at Bristol Motor Speedway for the running of the Titan Roof 150 on Wednesday, August 21st.
