In only his fifth career NASCAR Whelen Southern Modified Tour start Ryan Preece found victory lane. He won the pole and then led every lap of the Kevin Powell Motorsports 199 at Bowman Gray Stadium on Saturday night.
The eight-time NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour winner and current points leader made his second start of 2013 in the Southern Tour. He finished second back on March 23rd at Southern National Motorsports Park. On Friday night Preece finished 16th after a late spin in the CARQUEST 150 Whelen Modified Tour race at Stafford Motor Speedway.
The 22-year-old Preece won by 1.040 seconds over five-time Bowman Gray winner Burt Myers. Cole Powell finished third, Danny Bohn fourth, Tim Brown fifth, John Smith sixth, Jeremy Gerstner seventh, and Luke Fleming was the last lead lap driver in eighth. Gary Putnam was ninth, and Andy Seuss tenth.
There were eight cautions for a total of 49 laps. Kyle Ebersole finished in 11th after issues and only made one point up on points leader George Brunnhoelzl III. Brunnhoelzl had his three race win streak broken after having panhard bar problems which forced him to a 12th place finish in the 20 car field.
After six races Brunnhoelzl has a 21 point lead over Ebersole. Burt Myers is 27 points back in third. Tim Brown is fourth, 33 points back even after missing one race. Andy Seuss rounds out the top five in points.
The next race up for the NASCAR Whelen Southern Modified Tour is the Titan Roof 150 on August 21st at Bristol Motor Speedway. The race is a combination race with the Whelen Modified Tour.
