After his fourth round submission victory against Rustam Khabilov in Albuquerque earlier this month, a hyped Benson Henderson marched around the cage declaring his supremacy. Since losing the title to Anthony Pettis, Henderson has gone on to win 2 straight fights; beating both Gilbert Melendez and Rustam Khabilov. Most thought that Henderson would be rewarded with a number one contender’s bout, most likely with Khabib Nurmagomedov. The UFC, however, has decided differently as Henderson has been linked to a fight with Rafael Dos Anjos.
The fight is booked to serve as the main event for the UFC Fight Night that will take place in Tulsa Oklahoma on August 23rd.
Though the fight will most likely not be for a chance at the championship bout, Rafael Dos Anjos is a mighty competitor, possesing black belt level Jiu Jitsu, one punch knockout power, and vicious Muay Thai. Dos Anjos, at this point, is a UFC veteran who has had his fair share of experience, in both victory and defeat. Owner of some of the most brutal leg kicks in the division, Dos Anjos’ most impressive feat is that he looks better every time he enters the Octagon. Having won six of his last seven fights, only losing to the surging Khabib Nurmagomedov, Dos Anjos is coming off an impressive knockout win of his own. At the very same event Henderson submitted Khabilov, Dos Santos went to war with Jason High, knocking him out in the second round.
Number one contender’s bout or not, this is a quality lightweight main event between two men who waste no time in the octagon. Especially being that this is a main event, it is unlikely that after 5 rounds of action, there will be only one man who deserves the victory.
