In the midst of the debacle that is the cancelled fight between Chael Sonnen and Wanderlei Silva, many rumors began swirling, though, one fact was prevalent; that Vitor Belfort and Chael Sonnen had agreed to fight each other at UFC 175.
It was reported that the fight would be at light heavyweight and that the outcome would decided who gets the next shot at the middleweight title after Chris Weidman and Lyoto Machida fight for the title. The facts became clearer as the fight became more concrete. For one, the fight will in fact take place at middleweight. It only makes sense to have a middleweight number one contender fight at middleweight. Secondly, it was said that the fight would decide the next challenger to the middleweight title. There was some initial confusion at that statement as Chael Sonnen is only 1-3 in his last four fights and has had 2 shots at middleweight gold already.
Juxtaposing Sonnen’s record is Vitor Belfort, a man who is 4-1 in his last 5 fights, only losing to the light heavyweight champion, Jon Jones, when he took the fight on short notice. Belfort hasn’t lost at middleweight since 2011 and is coming off 3 straight knockouts. He has beaten former Strikeforce Champion, Luke Rockhold and Former Pride and Strikeforce Champion, Dan Henderson. Dana White, President of the UFC cleared up the rumors stating that this fight is only a number one contender bout for Belfort. In other words, If Belfort wins, he gets the title shot, this is not the case for Sonnen if he wins, however.
