Much to the surprise of the MMA world, the UFC announced that Wanderlei Silva and Chael Sonnen will not have their much anticipated match at UFC 175. News came in that Wanderlei Silva has pulled from the fight due to his inability to partake in the Nevada State Athletic Commission’s random drug testing that both fighters agreed to. It was said that Wanderlei refused the drug test, though without a reason. Not taking the drug test has made him ineligible to compete according to the Nevada State Athletic Commission. Sonnen will now take on the surging middleweight powerhouse, Vitor Belfort.
Although the fight will take place at light heavyweight, Dana White confirmed that the winner of this fight will be in line for a title fight at middleweight. Both men have made their marks in the middleweight division but have also dabbled at 205 pounds. Due to the relatively short notice, the fight will take place a division higher so the fighters do not need to cut as much weight.
Vitor Belfort has reignited his career as of late, boasting a 3 fight win streak over some of MMA’s finest. In his past three fights he has landed vicious head kicks to set up the knockout. His latest win, a first round knockout over Dan Henderson, really garnered some attention because it was the first time Dan Henderson had ever been stopped due to strikes.
Sonnen hasn’t been so lucky, losing 3 of his last 4 bouts. Fighting in a number one contenders bout seems a bit of farfetched for a man who hasn’t posted very good numbers in his recent fights. Sonnen will always be a draw, however, as he is a fast talker and is willing fight anybody at any time.
What this fight comes down to is the UFC being able to reach into their deep roster of talent and come up with a fight that might even be more intriguing than the original fight.
