A lightweight bout between Jorge Masvidal and Daron Cruickshank has been added to the UFC on Fox card that will take place in San Jose at the end of July. Both Masvidal and Cruickshank are two up and coming fighters that have been on both the winning and losing side in their careers. Masividal, long and powerful striker was last seen in the Octagon putting in a winning effort against former top contender, Pat Healy.
In his last three bouts, Masvidal has defeated two high profile opponents in Ultimate Fighter winner, Michael Chiesa, and Pat Healy, a man who was knocking on the door of being ranked in the top 10 of the division. Unfortunately for Masvidal, he was defeated by Rustam Khabilov, who is now scheduled to fight former champion, Benson Henderson on June 7th. Masvidal has defeated some quality opponents, but, unfortunately, he has also lost to some big names as well. A fight with Cruickshank is the perfect opportunity to establish himself as a consistent, skillful fighter who is ready to break into the upper tier of the division.
Since competing on The Ultimate Fighter Live, Daron Cruickshank has posted a UFC record of 5-2, not bad, but not great. Cruickshank's high-velocity and flashy kickboxing style makes him the kind of fighter who can win, and win big. His incredible KO victory over Mike Rio via wheel kick is a testament to the massive skill and technique he possesses. However, much like Masvidal, Cruickshank has lost to some higher-quality opponents just as he was beginning to create some momentum for himself. Cruickshank, because of his style, is the kind of fighter who lives and dies by the sword.
For both men, a win will mean building momentum in their careers, momentum that has seemed to just barely escape them thus far in their careers. A win for either man will vault them from prospect to potential contenders, and with each fighter's style being finish-heavy, the fans are sure to be in for a treat when these two meet in the middle of the cage on July 26th.
