Since Georges St. Pierre retired the welterweight division has never been so astir with mouth-watering matchups. Recently making headlines is Matt Brown after winning his seventh fight in a row earlier this month. Brown has been calling for a title shot, but one welterweight contender has been calling for Brown. Hector Lombard, coming off his win over Jake Shields, reached out to Matt Brown via Twitter and called the fighter out. Many people were fans of this fight but it seems the UFC has other plans for Lombard.
News broke that Lombard is being targeted to fight Dong Hyun Kim at a UFC Fight Night in China. Kim has been a contender in the welterweight division for a long time and is most recently coming off back to back knockout wins, and is riding a 4 fight win streak. As of his last two fights, Kim has been knocking off contenders in John Hathaway and Erick Silva, both of which he brutally knocked out. Always known for his grappling, Kim is showing a new wrinkle in his game and is reaping the benefits of doing so. A fight with Lombard is, without a doubt, his most high profile fight since he lost to Carlos Condit in 2011. This is Kim's second chance at breaking into the elite of the division and putting himself only a fight or two away from a possible title shot.
Lombard has also been busy at welterweight, a new found weight class for the fighter. Having made a name for himself at middle weight, Lombard dropped down to 170 pounds last year and has gone 2-0 since. With wins over Nate Marquardt and Jake Shields, Lombard has proved himself a definite threat to the welterweight title and a win over Kim would mean some serious momentum for the Judo-based fighter. Though a win over Kim might not be enough to earn Lombard a title shot, it would most definitely put him 1, maybe 2 more wins away from doing so.
This fight is a pivotal point in the careers for both fighters. For Kim, it's a second chance to prove that he has what it take to hang with the top of the weltwerweight division. For Lombard, it's a rejuvenation in his career and an opportunity to show the world that he is one of the best fighters in the world.
