In another action-packed matchup announced by the UFC, Edson Barboza an Evan Dunham will go to war July 16th at UFC Fight Night in Atlantic City. This event is headlined by Jim Miller and Donald Cerrone, a fight that will be hard to top. Dunham versus Barboza, however, is the type of fight that has the potential to steal the show as both fighters have a crowd-pleasing style that have resulted in some of the greatest fights and knockouts in lightweight history.
Evan Dunham was once considered the top rising prospect in the UFC’s lightweight division. Rattling off 4 straight wins including a decision win TUF winner, Efrain Escudero and former top contender Tyson Griffin. Dunham then went on to lose a razor thin decision against former welterwight and lightweight title challenger, Sean Sherk, though, many believed Dunham had won that fight. Since the Sherk fight, Dunham has been up and down in his career, unable to gain any real momentum, he has gone 3-3 in his last 6 fights, most recently losing by triangle choke to Donald Cerrone. One a 2 fight losing streak, this is a crucial fight for Dunham as a win over Barboza will keep him afloat as a top 15 fighter.
Edson Barboza, owner of one of the most vicious knockouts in UFC history, also came into the UFC on a tear, proving himself to be a top prospect. Topping off a 4 fight win streak with his famous wheel kick KO of Terry Etim, Barboza was poised to make a run at the UFC title until he was upset by Jamie Varner, losing that fight by TKO. Since his loss to Varner, Barboza has gone 3-1 in his past 4, most recently losing to Donald Cerrone via submission.
Though Barboza is riding more momentum then Dunham in terms of winning streaks, this fight is a must win for either fighter if they expect to stay within contention in the shark tank that is the UFC’s lightweight division.
