Another electrifying bout has been added to The World Series of Fighting’s summer card on July 5th. Melvin ‘The Young Assassin’ Guillard will fight Gesias ‘JZ’ Cavalcante in a lightweight matchup that could determine the next title challenger in the WSOF lightweight division.
Guillard was cut from the UFC in March after losing a lopsided decision to Michael Johnson, dropping him to just 2-5 in his past 7 bouts with the UFC. It didn’t take long for Guillard to sign with WSOF and, only a month after, he has a fight booked. Guillard’s debut at WSOF 11 is highly anticipated as, many believe, this is Guillard’s second chance at becoming a world champion in a highly regarded professional league; a feat he could never quite accomplish in the UFC.
Taking on Guillard is MMA and WSOF veteran, Gesias Cavalcante. Gesias ‘JZ’ Cavalcante has been one of the top lightweights in the world for years. Owning a 18-7-1 record, ‘JZ’ has been with the WSOF since their inaugural event, submitting TJ O’Brien. Since his first win with the WSOF, Cavalcante has gone 1-1, pushing his promotional record to just 2-1. His most recent win came at WSOF 4, knocking out former UFC lightweight, Tyson Griffin. With that impressive win, Cavalcante will look to take on another former UFC lightweight contender in Melvin Guillard and defy the odds once more.
With a win over Guillard, Calavante, who would then have back to back wins over talented UFC veterans, can make a case for being the next title challenger, especially if, now-champion, Justin Gaethje, is able to hold on to his belt when facing Nick Newell at the very same event. If the stars align, the WSOF could be looking at their very first rematch, a lightweight title fight between Justin Gaethje and Gesias Cavalcante.
Though, Melvin Guillard will surely do his best to prevent that from happening.
The WSOF 11 Main Card, set for July 5 now has three bouts:
