The theme behind this fight comes from the word potential. Often wasted, sometimes unappreciated, potential is the kind of word that every fighter wants to hear from someone. John ‘Doomsday’ Howard and Rick ‘The Horror’ Story are two welterweights who have nothing but potential when it comes to their MMA careers.
It was announced recently that Howard and Story will face off at UFC Fight Night 45, in Atlantic City, NJ. Howard and Story find themselves in very similar positions in their careers, both once exciting prospects, both derailed from their rise to the top, and both currently struggling to put together a string of wins and be considered at the top of the division.
John Howard most recently lost a close decision against Ryan LaFlare at UFC Fight Night 39. Howard, a tremendous power puncher, took a nasty groin shot early in that fight, leaving him crumpled on the mat, no where near the same fighter he was before the illegal blow. After his loss to LaFlare, Howard briefly cited the illegal shot as the reason he lost the fight and campaigned for a rematch. That did not last long as LaFlare signed a fight against Gunnar Nelson, forcing Howard to move on.
A former top prospect in Rick Story is not a, easy fight, however. Howard’s unfortunate loss did not do much damage in his standings as Story is still considered one of the top guys in the division. Story most recently lost a split decision to TUF winner, Kelvin Gastelum. Story dropped Gastelum in their fight, almost finishing it early. Gastelum, however, recovered and was able to come from behind to steal the fight from Story.
Both Story and Howard have massive potential in their careers. Becoming something worthy means defeating worthy opponents and, at UFC Fight Night 45, when Howard and Story fight each other, each will look to defeat their worthy foe.
