Gleison Tibau SD3 Jamie Varner – Lightweight
UFC fans know you can't assume Varner has lost until he's stopped or the final horn has gone off, and Tibau almost found that out the hard way. The Brazilian looked to be in control after two rounds but had to hold off a typical late Varner surge to earn a narrow split decision.
Tibau waited to counter the more aggressive Varner in the opening round, and his patience was rewarded with a powerful takedown in the closing minute. He ended up on top again early in the second after Varner tried for a leaping guillotine that he was unable to keep secured on his larger foe. Tibau took Varner's back and landed hard body shots throughout.
Knowing he might need a finish to win, Varner came out firing punches to the body and head in the final stanza. He finally broke through with a left hand that stunned Tibau, who had to play defense for the final 90 seconds or so as Varner tried to pound him out.
Two judges gave Tibau 29-28 cards, while the dissenting card was 29-27 for Varner.
Lest there be any doubt that size matters even at 125 pounds, this fight showed that it does. The bigger Elliott simply bullied Gaudinot for the better part of 15 minutes, taking two 30-26 cards and one 30-27 score.
Gaudinot managed to hang in as long as the fight stayed standing, but he was repeatedly taken down, especially in Rounds 2 and 3. Once there, he was pretty much helpless as Elliott was a whirling dervish of ground and pound activity. Gaudinot rarely freed himself up, and the decision was a foregone conclusion once the final horn sounded.
Hyun Gyu Lim def. Pascal Krauss by KO at 3:58 of Round 1 – Welterweight
Even with noticeable height and reach advantages, Lim was content to meet Krauss right in the center to trade strikes. That strategy turned out to be an effective one as he hurt Krauss multiple times en route to a vicious first-round KO.
The first exchanges were fairly even, though that changed with a Lim right hand to the forehead. Krauss staggered back to his feet but still appeared wobbly, yet Lim was unable to finish him off. Just when Krause began to fire back, Lim landed a crushing knee to the face. One more right hand was all the ref needed to see before calling it off at the 3:58 mark.
Chico Camus UD3. Kyung Ho Kang – Bantamweight
Fighting in front of his hometown fans, Camus gave the fans in Milwaukee a thrill in the opener on Fox Sports 1. After spending a big portion of the fight underneath the larger Kang, Camus pulled off a heroic last minute flurry and earned a unanimous decision.
Kang came out using his length advantage to land hard kicks to the body, but Camus was able to answer with accurate punching. A perfectly timed takedown had Kang on top for the second half of the round, though Chico prevented him from doing much damage or getting to mount.
The second round began the way the previous one ended, with Kang scoring an immediate takedown. The difference was that Camus rolled into top position and began landing damaging shots, giving him some momentum going into the final frame.
Kang looked like he was going to return to his kicks, but Camus responded with crisp one-two punches that seemed to stun him. Kang succeeded in two more takedowns, but just as it appeared he was going to smother his opponent until the end of the fight, Camus connected on a huge upkick. He swarmed with hammer fists and punches and probably would have earned a TKO had he not run out of time.
As it turned out, he didn't need it. Two judges saw it 29-28 for the hometown fighter with the third scoring it 30-27.
