According to Lohse, Fairchild talked to Brewer catcher Martin Maldonado about Lohse’s “grumpy face,” telling Maldonado that it was going to cost him some strikes. Fox Sports Wisconsin reported the story.
The comment reportedly came after Lohse surrendered a two-run homer to Nate Schierholtz in the third inning. There had been a close pitch on a 2-1 count that Fairchild called a ball. On the next delivery, Lohse threw a fastball that Schierholtz belted over the wall in right-center field.
“Not a whole lot of it was me,” Lohse said. “When you have an umpire that says your grumpy face is going to cost you strikes you’ve got issues. I wasn’t as consistent as I want to be, but I made a lot of really good pitches and I guess I looked funny out there and wasn’t going to get the calls.”
Maldonado didn’t tell Lohse about the comment until after the veteran had been pulled from the game. Lohse surrendered three runs in five innings on a pair of homers while throwing 100 pitches.
“Luckily they didn’t tell me until later,” Lohse said. “… I don’t think I did anything to show him up. I had a lot of calls that I thought could have went my way. I get the ball back and I made another pitch. Obviously it is frustrating but my job is to go out there and make pitches. I can’t do anything about what is called or not, but it’s just hard to adjust to something that’s inconsistent.”
In fairness, Chicago starter Jake Arrieta also appeared to be getting squeezed at times during the game.
Lohse wasn’t the only Brewer to have a problem with Fairchild. Logan Schafer threw his batting helmet and bat after being called out on a 3-2 pitch for the final out of the game. The pitch appeared to be down, an area that was not being called a strike often by Fairchild.
“Just let us play the game,” Lohse said. “Don’t let egos get in the way. There were other things going on out there. We’re trying to play the game. Just let us play.”
