The Helena Brewers were shut down for six innings by Idaho Falls left-hander Jonathan Dziedzic Saturday night as the Chukars took Game 1 of the Pioneer League Championship Series 2-1 at Idaho Falls, Idaho.
Dziedzic allowed just two hits and a walk while fanning eight over six shutout innings. Brewers starter Anthony Banda was solid, allowing two runs on five hits with three walks and two strikeouts, but the Helena offense was just never able to get into gear.
Idaho Falls got both of its runs in the bottom of the third inning. Helena center fielder Dionis Hinojosa bobbled Elier Hernandez’s single, allowing Humberto Arteaga to score the first run and Hunter Dozier followed that with an RBI double down the left-field line.
The Brewers loaded the bases in the seventh against reliever Josiel Martinez thanks to a pair of errors and a bunt single by Adam Giacalone.
But Helena could only get one run. That scored when Jose Pena grounded into a double play. The Brewers had just one baserunner the rest of the way.
Helena managed just four singles on the night, one each by Charlie Markson, Michael Ratterree, Giacalone and Renaldo Jenkins. Taylor Brennan had a tough night, going 0-for-3 with three punchouts.
Tristan Archer pitched two shutout innings of relief for the Brewers, allowing two hits and a walk while fanning four.
Game 2 is set for Monday night in Helena, with Game 3 to be played Tuesday night at Helena if necessary.
