But on Tuesday night, it was Ratterree’s arm that might have propelled the Brewers to the Pioneer League Championship Series in a come-from-behind 8-6 win at Helena, Mont., that closed out a two-game sweep of the Great Falls Voyagers in the North Division Series.
The Brewers were in an early 5-1 hole when starter Barrett Astin couldn’t record an out in the second inning and while the bullpen held the Great Falls Voyagers at bay, the Helena bats began to chip their way back.
Trailing 5-3 in the top of the fifth, Ratterree fielded a single to right field by Christian Stringer and came up firing, nailing Corey Thompson trying to score from second and keeping the Great Falls lead right where it was.
In the bottom of the fifth, Dustin Houle drove in a run with a single and Taylor Brennan cracked a two-run double to give the Brewers their first lead of the night.
Chris Razo allowed just one hit while walking four in four scoreless innings for Helena to pick up the victory in relief of Astin, who was roughed up for five runs on five hits with four walks. He was yanked after facing three batters in the second.
Sean Albury worked a scoreless inning, Tanner Poppe allowed a run on two hits and two walks in 1.1 innings and Tyler Alexander got the final five outs in order for the save, including striking out the side in the top of the ninth.
Trailing 5-1 in the third, Jose Pena had an RBI single and Jalen Harris scored on a wild pitch after leading off the bottom of the fourth with a triple to pull the Brewers to within 5-3.
Helena added an insurance run in the sixth on a bases-loaded walk to Pena and after Great Falls made it 7-6 in the top of the eighth, the Brewers put it away with a run in the bottom of the inning on an RBI single by Pena.
Giacalone was 3-for-4 and scored a run while Pena was 2-for-2 with three RBI and Ratterree was 2-for-2 with three walks and scored four times.
The win propels Helena back to the PLCS for the first time since the Brewers won the league title in 2010. They will host the winner of the Idaho Falls-Grand Junction series in Game 1 of the championship series on Saturday. Idaho Falls leads the series 1-0 after a 7-1 win at home on Monday, but Tuesday’s Game 2 was postponed due to weather.
The teams will play at 1:05 Central Time today in Grand Junction for Game 2, with the decisive Game 3 scheduled for 6:05 p.m. Central Time, if necessary.
