He returned to North Carolina to be with his wife Katie for the birth of the couple’s first child. Manager Ron Roenicke told MLB.com that both mother and baby were healthy.
Right-hander Donovan Hand was recalled to take Wooten’s spot on the roster and after getting four outs in relief of starter Tom Gorzelanny in the Crew’s 8-6 loss to the St. Louis Cardinals at Miller Park Wednesday afternoon, was sent back to Triple-A Nashville after the game.
Also sent out was outfielder-first baseman Sean Halton, who had four RBI in two starts against the Cardinals on Tuesday and Wednesday. Outfielder Caleb Gindl will rejoin the team in Cincinnati on Friday after being recalled from Nashville.
Halton knew the move was coming. Gindl needed to spend 10 days back in Triple-A without a disabled list move by the parent Brewers and that period expired Wednesday. Gindl gives the Brewers more outfield flexibility with starters Carlos Gomez and Norichika Aoki nursing right-knee ailments. Gomez hasn’t played since spraining his knee Aug. 15 against the Reds and Aoki was out of the lineup against the Cardinals on Wednesday.
Because of the shortened bench, infielders Yuniesky Betancourt and Jeff Bianchi were the emergency outfielders on Wednesday. The only three healthy outfielders—Khris Davis, Logan Schafer and Halton—were all in the lineup.
Aoki should be back in right field Friday night and Gomez, who ran the bases on Wednesday, hopes to be back to open the three-game series at Great American Ballpark in Cincinnati as well.
