CBSNews.com reported Friday that members of the inner circle of New York Yankees third baseman Alex Rodriguez obtained and leaked documents from the Biogenesis clinic in Miami that implicated Milwaukee Brewers outfielder Ryan Braun and one other player.
The documents were leaked to Yahoo Sports in February, according to information learned by CBS’ “60 Minutes” news show, just days after the weekly Miami New Times published documents that purported Rodriguez’s use of performance-enhancing drugs.
Braun was slapped with a 65-game suspension last month and is out for the remainder of the season after choosing not to appeal.
Also implicated in the documents was Rodriguez’s Yankee teammate, catcher Francisco Cervelli, who was one of a dozen players suspended last week for 50 games each by Major League Baseball.
According to “60 Minutes,” the documents originally obtained by the Miami New Times contained the names of Braun and Cervelli, but that the names had been redacted. According to two sources with direct knowledge of the matter, members of Rodriguez’s camp obtained unredacted versions of the same documents and leaked them.
Also implicated in the documents leaked to Yahoo Sports was Danny Valencia of the Baltimore Orioles, who was investigated and later cleared by MLB.
Rodriguez was given a 211-game suspension, but is playing pending appeal. His case is to be heard by arbitrator Fredric Horowitz in the coming weeks.
David Cornwall, an attorney for Rodriguez, issued a statement to “60 Minutes” on the latest allegations:
The allegations are untrue and are another attempt to harm Alex—this time by driving a wedge between Alex and other players in the game. While Alex focuses on baseball and repeatedly states that he is going to respect the appeal process, the drumbeat of false allegations continues.”
