With the season we at Brewers 101 have decided to break down the positions on the field for this past season of Brewers baseball. I will continue with first base. This one will be a little more difficult. So without further ado a look at the first base position.
The only first baseman the Brewers used this season was Prince Fielder. He played in all 162 games. The only time Fielder was not at first base was when he was a designated hitter or when the game was out of control. But he did start at first base in 170 out of 173 games including the postseason.
Prince Fielder: Primary first baseman
.299 AVG. 38 HR. 120 RBI. .990 fielding percentage
Prince Fielder had another outstanding season for Milwaukee both on offense and defensively. He didn't have too many problems at first base but he still has issues getting to balls overthrown from his defense around him. But he did a great job blocking balls in the dirt and he did an average job at getting to balls in the hole. So in this writer's opinion he did a great job but he could have been better at his decision making. But he will always be known for his power. And he can be known for his power in any market in baseball. Many people outside the organization believe the Brewers can do better defensively.
The Brewers did field a different first baseman for three games but there is not enough sample size. The only times Fielder was not at first was when he played designated hitter. And Mat Gamel and Mark Kotsay performed admirably.
