This week the Michigan State women’s golf team took part in the Central District Invitational, held at the Lakewood Ranch Cypress Course in Lakewood Ranch, Florida. There the Spartans set new records in school program history as they cruised to a third place finish.
As a team, the Spartans totaled 849 (288,278,283) for 15 under par. They finished in third finished behind Vanderbilt and Central Florida, who scored 20 under 844 (276,287,281) and 19 under 845 (280,281,284) respectively.
For MSU women’s golf, this was the lowest score for a 54-hole event in program history. The previous record for the team was a score of 860 set at the Tar Heel Invitational in 2009. The Spartans also set the school record in lowest 18-hole score with 278.The team’s score of 283 on Tuesday was the third lowest in program history.
Senior Allyssa Ferrell led the way on the team with her own record-setting performance. The Edgerton, Wisconsin native set the program record for lowest 18-hole score with 67, and the lowest 54-hole score with 207 (71,67,69). Ferrell tied Vanderbilt’s Simin Feng for first place on the individual leaderboard.
"I don't think the golf course is by any means easy," said MSU head coach Stacy Slobodnik-Stoll. "I think it's a tribute to women's golf. I think as the years go by, the scores are getting lower and lower. If you look to the future of the LPGA Tour, we've got to get our players used to posting numbers under-par now. I think the more they can do this, the more they can know they're capable and the easier that transition is going to be for them.
"I saw great iron play today, lots of birdie attempts, and obviously many birdies went in. So many teams made so many great birdies. For us, it's letting our kids know what they're really capable of. I think that's the main lesson from this. Obviously for all of us, it just felt great being in the sun and playing golf. We're playing golf in perfect conditions. It's 80 degrees, a slight breeze, a beautiful course and all the host families that are there to support us. It's just fun.
"The team was so excited last night that we shot the school record (for a single round). They were thrilled. Those things are always in the back of their minds as athletes. And for Allyssa, it's an awesome honor. It's one more step for us in the right direction."
The next event for the Spartans will be the Bryan National Collegiate. The event will take place from March 28th through the 30th at the Bryan Park Champions Course in Greensboro, North Carolina.
