In their first event for the year, the women’s golf team for Michigan State competed in the 16 team Northrop Grumman Regional Challenge. The event took place at the Palos Verdes Country Club in Palos Verdes, California.
The 24th ranked Spartans, as a team, shot a total of 56 over, 908 over the three rounds of golf, (304-298-306).
Junior Trisha Witherby led the team in scoring with her new career-low of 220 (72-73-75) and notched a team-best of 10 birdies for the event. She tied for 18th place on the individual leaderboards.
"We did a lot of great things," said Spartan head coach Stacy Slobodnik-Stoll. "Trisha really came into her own this week, which was really exciting to see. Obviously we have some other areas we need to work on, but this is a difficult golf course to start out on, it's a very challenging and demanding course for any team, especially the ones coming from out East. It's always a great experience playing out here and the weather was the best it's been since we've been coming to this tournament."
Freshman Kelly Grassel and senior Allyssa Ferrell each followed Witherby with top-50 finishes in the event. Grassel tied for 44th with her score of 227 (78-72-77). Ferrell placed in a tie at 49th place with a score of 228 (77-74-77).
Senior Liz Nagel placed at a tie in 74th place with a total of 234 (77-79-78).
After a rock start on Sunday shooting, 12 over, senior Christine Meier cooled down and finished the last two rounds with scores of eight and six over. She finished with a total score of 239 (83-79-77) and finished in a tie for 80th.
Junior Lindsey McPherson played at the event as an individual and shot a 235 (84-79-72).
The University of Southern California Trojans placed first on the team standings with a 14 over 866. Trojan Annie Park topped the individual leaderboards with a six under 207 (67-67-73).
The Spartans’ next event will be the Central District Invitational. The event will be composed of three rounds of play beginning on the 17th. It will take place at the Lakewood Ranch Cypress Course in Sarasota, Florida.
