The Michigan State hockey team is headed to Amherst, Massachusetts to open up the 2013-14 hockey season with a two game series against the UMass Minutemen. UMass has already played two games so far this season, both resulted in a loss. This will be the fourth match between the two schools. Michigan State owns the series, 3-0.
The Spartans are bringing back a lot of experience. Five seniors, five juniors, and seven sophomores, a total of 17 letter winners, are back again for another season. This experience accounted for 84% of the total offensive production from last season, specifically the top six scorers on the team. Matt Berry (15-16-31), Tanner Sorrenson (13-8-21), Matt DeBlouw (10-11-21), Greg Wolfe (9-12-21), Brent Darnell (10-10-20) and Lee Reimer (4-13-17) accounted for 70% of the Spartan goals and 89% of the team's total points in 2012-13.
After ending their 32 year relationship with the CCHA, MSU will be a part of the inaugural season of the new Big Ten Hockey. Joining the Spartans are Ohio State, Michigan Penn State, Minnesota, and Wisconsin.
The first game will take place on Friday night, followed by the second game on Saturday. Both games will take place at 7 pm Eastern Time at the Mullins Center.
