For the 500th game in Spartan Stadium the Michigan State football team hosted the Indiana Hoosiers for homecoming. The Spartan offense, which now finally seems in tune, combined with their top ranked defense, kept the Hoosiers in check as MSU notched another Big Ten victory to improve to 2-0 in the Big Ten and 5-1 overall for the season. The Spartans pulled away with a 42-28 victory.
Junior tail back Jeremy Langford led the rushing game again on Saturday and put up some solid numbers. On 23 carries Langford netted 109 yards and rushed for three touchdowns. For his performance Langford was honored with the Big Ten Offensive Player of the Week award.
"Jeremy Langford did a great job Saturday of finding the holes, getting through the line of scrimmage and then breaking some tackles," said co-offensive coordinator/running backs coach Dave Warner. "He picked up quite a few yards after contact against Indiana. On this third touchdown run late in the third quarter, Jeremy finally had an opportunity to show off his true speed when he ran around left end. Right now, his confidence is up and he wants the ball in his hands.
Delton Williams netted 92 yards on 12 touches and R.J. Shelton carried twice, each for 20 yards and scored as well on the ground.
Quarterback Connor Cook had his best start yet behind center. He threw 22-31 for 235 yards with two passing touchdowns and only one interception. Once again he spread the passing game well as he utilized 11 different receivers; seven of them notched double-digit reception yards. Tony Lippett led the receiving corps with 64 total yards on six catches.
Once again, as they seem to do week after week, the Spartan defense showed up to play. After allowing a rushing touchdown on Indiana’s opening drive, MSU almost completely shut down the Hoosier running game, allowing only 92 total yards on 27 attempts. Indiana’s average rush was only 3.4 yards while they allowed the Spartans to rush an average of 5.1 per carry.
With the running game in check, Hoosier quarterback tried to put the game on his back, throwing 14-30 for 137 yards but was eventually pulled for backup Tre Roberson who threw 11-17 for 122 yards and one interception and two touchdown passes.
Spartan junior Punter Mike Sadler also shined furing the homecoming game. He averaged a career-best 59.2 yards per punt out of four. For this he was honored with the Big Ten Special Teams Player of the Week Award.
"Mike has done a great job of pinning opponents inside their own 20 all year long, but on Saturday he had the opportunity to show off his leg strength and made the most of it," said linebackers/special teams coach Mike Tressel. "His ability to flip the field position was critical to our victory. He is a weapon for this football team."
Next weekend the Spartans will stay at home and host the Purdue Boilermakers.
