The Michigan State men’s soccer team will be traveling to Omaha, Nebraska where they will face fifth ranked Creighton Bluejays. The 4-1-0 Spartans are fresh off their long weekend break in play which was preceded with a 1-0 win over Bowling Green on the 18th.
So far this season MSU is off to a solid start. The team is first in the Big Ten Conference in fewest goals allowed, with two, and goals against average, with .40. They are also second in assists per game, 2.4, and shutouts, with four. Nationally the team is fourth in shutout percentage with 0.80, eighth in save percentage, with 0.9, and ninth in goals against average with 0.40.
Spartan goalkeeper Zach Bennett has just notch his second straight Big Ten Defensive Player of the Week today. In the team’s most recent game against Bowling Green, Bennett posted his career high of eight saves to help shutout their opponent for the second straight game in a row and fourth of the season.
On the offense, the Spartans are playing very strong. So far this season the Spartans have out-shot their opponents, 80-59. They average as a team 16 shots per game with a 0.112 shooting percentage. Junior Adam Montague leads Michigan State in shooting with 17 shots on goal.
This match will mark the very first meeting between these two teams. Creighton is currently ranked fifth in the NCSAA poll. The Bluejays are currently 5-1-0 in the season, with their most recent win being against No. 7 St John’s, 1-0 in overtime.
The game will take place tomorrow the 24th at Morrison Stadium in Omaha, Nebraska at 8 pm Eastern Time.
