The Michigan State football team took their first loss of the season today against long-time rival, The Notre Dame Fighting Irish. While it was kept a close game, the Spartans again showed little production on the offensive side of the ball. Notre Dame will keep the Megaphone Trophy for the third year in a row with their victory, 13-17.
Third year sophomore Connor Cook started behind center again today. His passing was inconsistent and he often missed receivers by throwing too high. The receivers themselves did not help matters worse as many of the on-target passes were dropped for incompletions. Cook threw 16-32 for 135 yards and one touchdown and threw one interception. After a rough hit in the fourth quarter, fifth year senior Andrew Maxwell played the final drive which ultimately failed after four downs, sealing the Fighting Irish win.
The Spartan rush game did show positive production again from starter Jeremy Lang. He ran 68 yards on 14 carries, averaging 4.9 per carry. Nick Hill also ran 34 yards on 13 touches.
Michigan State’s defense still looked mostly solid, but could not carry the team to victory as they have done before this season. Notre Dame starting quarterback, Tommy Rees threw 14-34 for 142 yards and never threw a pick. The Spartans kept their opponents’ rushing game in check as they only allowed 82 yards on 32 carries.
The Spartans now sit at 3-1 for the season and they have a week off before they begin conference play. Hopefully before their next game the Spartans answer a lot of questions pertaining to their offense. MSU will travel to Iowa on October 5th for their Big Ten opener.
