Tomorrow the Michigan State football team will travel to South Bend, Indiana, as they are set to take on longtime rival, the Notre Dame Fighting Irish who are ranked 22nd in the nation. This will be the first real test for the Spartans this year. This game will answer two very important questions as the Spartans as they get set for conference play. First is if their defense, which has played great so far this season, can handle a big school offense. Second is if the Spartan offense can compete against a tough defense like Notre Dame’s.
Michigan State’s defense will look to keep up their dominating play style this weekend. The Spartan defense is currently ranked first in the FBS, allowing only an average of 52 rushing yards per game and 127 passing yards per game. In their first two games this season, they carried the team to victory as they scored four of the six team touchdowns.
In their game against Youngstown State last week it seemed the Michigan State offense has finally clicked together. Now they look to keep in sync again this week. While it’s known that Notre Dame has a weaker secondary, Spartan quarterback Connor Cook has yet to demonstrate any accuracy in throwing deep passes down the field. Jeremy Langford will be counted upon to lead the rushing game again. So far this season he has posted 200 total rush yards and four rushing touchdowns.
Notre Dame is currently 2-1 in the season and are looking to bounce back after two very close games. Last week they rallied late in the game to snag a 31-24 victory over the Purdue Boilermakers. The week before they lost a close one away at the Big House against the Michigan Wolverines, 41-30.
This game will be the 76th meeting of the two teams. Notre Dame currently leads the series 46-28-1. Last year the Fighting Irish defeated the Spartans 20-3 to hold on to the Megaphone, the rivalry trophy between the two teams, awarded to the winner of each meeting.
The game will start at 3:30 pm Eastern Time and will air on NBC.
