Former Michigan State starting quarterback, Brian Hoyer, has been named the starter for the Cleveland Browns for this Sunday's game. This will be his first start for the Browns, and his second career start. Hoyer surprisingly won the starting job over over the second string QB Jason Campbell. The first string quarterback, Brandon Weeden, has been sidelined due to injury.
Hoyer was on the Spartan football squad between 2004 and 2008. The Lakewood Ohio native started for the Spartans in 2007 and 2008. His best season was in 2007 when Hoyer threw 223 out of 376 for 2725 yards and 20 passing touchdowns for the season. His passer efficiency rating was 131.9.
While Hoyer did not get picked in the 2009 NFL draft, he did end up signing with the New England Patriots where he supported as back-up behind the famous Tom Brady for three seasons. He was released by the team in August of 2012. He later signed with the injury ridden Pittsburgh Steelers where he served as back-up for Charlie Batch for two games. In December he was released again but was claimed off waivers two days later by the Arizona Cardinals. His first career NFL start was with the Cardinals in the final game of the 2012-2013 seasons against the San Francisco 49ers.
On May 16th of this year, Hoyer signed a two year deal with the Cleveland Browns. The game will be held in Mall of America Field as the Browns take on the Minnesota Vikings. The game is scheduled for 1:00 pm Eastern Time and is set to air on CBS Sports.
