After two games where little to no effectiveness was shown, Michigan State’s offense finally clicked and put up incredible numbers and production in their game against Youngstown State where the Spartans came out victorious, 55-17. The game might have answered a lot of questions for head coach Mark Dantonio and the fans as well, specifically what to do with the quarterback situation.
Third year sophomore Connor Cook started behind center for the Spartans for the second time this week. After a less than satisfactory showing last week against South Florida, Cook put up great numbers with only playing little more than half the game. He posted 15 completions on 22 attempts for 202 yards and four passing touchdowns. He spread the ball out often utilizing 10 receivers. He also rushed twice for 25 yards. Tyler O’Connor took over behind center in the 3rd quarter.
The rushing game saw some significant improvement as well. Again Dantonio spread the tailback responsibilities among Riley Bullough, Nick Hill, and Jeremy Langford. Hill netted 83 yards on nine runs while Langford ran for 69 on 15 touches. Bullough ran 10 times for 36 yards.
The Spartan defense was again on point and showing their best stuff in shutting down Youngstown offense and limiting their score. The Penguins were held to only 53 net rushing yards and 121 passing yards. Penguins starting quarterback, Kurt Hess, could only complete 11 passes on 27 attempts with one passing touchdown.
The 3-0 Spartans feel better now that they’ve seen some production on their offense, but they still must be prepared to face #22 Notre Dame and their defense next week as the Spartans will travel to South Bend, Indiana.
