The Michigan State Spartan football team is looking to remain undefeated as they prepare to host the Youngstown State Penguins today. This will mark the fourth time Michigan State has played an FCS opponent, and the second meeting against YSU. The Spartan won the previous meeting, the season opener in 2011, 28-6.
Michigan State will hopefully answer some serious questions about their offense this weekend as they start preparing for conference play. It has not been confirmed who will start at quarterback in this game either. Connor Cook started for the Spartans last week against South Florida, but did not stay in for much of the game as he shared snaps with Andrew Maxwell and Tyler O’Connor.
Running back Jeremy Langford will look to continue his production this week as well. While he hasn’t yet put up such numbers as fans saw with Le’Veon Bell or Edwin Baker, but he is still averaging 4.6 yards per carry with two rushing touchdowns. He also happens to be leading the team in receiving with 28 yards on seven catches. Head coach Mark Dantonio will definitely be looking for improvement from his receivers and tight ends.
The Spartan defense on the other hand has very little room for improvement. They currently among the leaders in the nation in numerous defensive categories: pass efficiency defense (second with 59.9 rating), total defense (third at 179.5 ypg.), rushing defense (fourth at 50.0 ypg.), pass defense (14th at 129.5 ypg.) and scoring defense (14th at 9.5 ppg).
Like the Spartans Youngstown State is off to a 2-0 start to the season. First they were victorious over Dayton, 28-10, and then they faced Morehead State, 67-13, both at home. They are currently ranked 23 in the FCS Coaches’ Poll.
Dantonio had previously coached at Youngstown State in the late 80s when he served on Jim Tressel’s coaching staff. As the defensive coordinator for the Penguins, Dantonio’s defense led the team to a perfect 11-0 season and ranked second nationally in 1990.
The game will be held at Spartan Stadium in East Lansing, MI. Kickoff is scheduled at 2:06 pm Eastern Time and will air on the Big Ten Network.
