The Michigan State women’s soccer team is preparing for a busy weekend as they take on Oakland University on Friday night at home. Then the team is slated to play away at New Mexico on Sunday. The Spartans are currently undefeated for the season as they stand with a solid 3-0-1 record.
Head Coach Tom Saxton says that the team is not under-estimating Oakland University, “We’ve got to take a mature approach because we can’t really look at their record,” said Saxton. “We’ve got to remember that they were a top-level team last year that beat Ohio State in the NCAA Tournament and advanced to the second round. Many of those players are back, so we’ve got to respect Oakland and realize we’ve got to focus on that game.”
Last year in the match-up with Oakland, the game ended with a scoreless tie, but Oakland isn’t the only school with experienced players. The Spartans still have 20 members from their 2012 season squad, including seven starters.
The New Mexico Lobos will make a formidable opponent as well. While their only two goals this season are from the same player, Dylann O’Connor, their goaltender from 2012 returns as well to mind the net. Lobos Cassie Ulrich already has one shutout, 29 saves and only four goals allowed, playing in all four games for New Mexico and on pace to break her past season record in saves and the conference record in saves per game.
The Oakland game will be the first game this season for the women’s soccer squad to be broadcast. It will air live on the Big Ten Digital Network on Friday at 5 pm Eastern Time.
