Michigan State head football coach Mark Dantonio hasn’t given a definite answer yet for who will be starting behind center this fall for the Spartans. Now the race for the starting spot just got more complicated as true freshman Damion Terry shined during the preseason team scrimmage this weekend.
"Damion Terry is a big, physical guy,” said Dantonio, “He's sudden, and he can create. He's still a freshman and that's the thing that bothers you a little bit, but he can create. The name of the game – and I've said this over and over again – is you've got to create at quarterback. You've got to take a bad play and make it a good one because things are going to break down. That's just the way football is. (After today's scrimmage) it makes it (the quarterback race) even more interesting. Damion throws a nice ball, and guys went up and caught the ball. It's exciting to see (his development).”
Terry’s stats for the game were exceptional as well. He threw 10-14 for 240 yards and three touchdowns. Andrew Maxwell, who started all 13 games for the Spartans last year threw for only 77 yards, completing 9-19.
At this time it is unsure whether Terry worked with the first team offense or played against first team defense, but his performance none the less requires coach Dantonio to re-evaluate his options on offense. Having Terry behind center actually expands the capabilities of the Spartan offense. He is the first true dual –threat quarterback under Dantonio’s tenure at MSU. Terry was able to move successfully out of the pocket, even running for 40 yards on 12 attempts.
It will be an interesting development, but the word should come down before next week Friday when the Spartans host the Western Michigan Broncos.
