"I join the rest of the Spartan Family in congratulating Matt and Randall for qualifying for the U.S. Open Championship," said Spartan head coach Casey Lubhan. "These young professionals continue to climb the ladder of professional golf, but they have never forgotten where they came from and they keep working away at their dream. I can only imagine how excited they will be to get to Merion."
At the Woodmont Country Club in Rockville, Maryland, Harmon finished in a tie for fifth place with a six under par, 135 after two rounds of play. Hutchinson was able to shoot an impressive nine under par, 132 and shared medalist honors. The top eight at the event were allowed to qualify for the PGA Tour event. The pair will tee off June 13th at the Merion Golf Club in Ardmore, Pennsylvania.
This will be Hutchinson’s third PGA Tour event after competing in the 2009 Buick Open and the 2012 John Deere Classic. Harmon is now competing in his fourth after participating in the 2007, 2008, and 2009 Buick Opens. Both players are now members of the Web.com Tour.
The two are the sixth and seventh former Spartans to be able to play in the U.S. Open and the first ones since John Koskinen in 2007.
A Grand Rapids, Michigan native, Harmon is currently in second in school career scoring with a 73.51 average. He was named Third-Team All-American in 2007. He helped the Spartans take two Big Ten Championships in 2005 and 2007. He placed third individually in the latter.
Hutchison, who hails from Traverse City, Michigan, earned four letters at Michigan State when he played between 2005 and 2009. He is currently seventh in school career scoring averages with a 74.94. He earned first-team All-Big Ten and PING All-Midwest Region honors during his junior year.Tags: Casey Lubhan, Matt Harmon, Michigan State, Michigan State Spartans, MSU, NCAA, Randall Hutchison, U.S. Open
