The Miami Heat are close to finalizing a contract extension with its head coach Erik Spoelstra. Miami will reward Spoelstra after guiding his team to three straight Finals appearances and winning the last two NBA Championships.
Spoelstra has been at the helm for the past five years and has led Miami to postseason berths in each season. His fortunes got better when the roster upgrades included LeBron James and Chris Bosh to form “The Big Three” with Dwyane Wade. Spoelstra has proven more than capable of getting three superstars to play together and sacrifice to achieve an ultimate goal. The Big Three have led the team to consecutive NBA titles after defeating the Oklahoma City Thunder in 2012 and the San Antonio Spurs this past June.
The Heat coach is 260-134 during his tenure. Also, he has won an astonishing 170 games since the James, Wade and Bosh trio joined forces on South Beach.
Spoelstra’s best season by far came this past season when the Heat won a franchise record 66 games, which included a 27-game winning streak. The Heat's winning streak was the second longest in league history. Miami finished off their stellar season by hoisting the Larry O’Brien trophy at season’s end after taking down the Spurs in a grueling seven game series.
Winning championships was one reason Spoelstra was elevated to the Heat’s head coaching position after Pat Riley became the GM in 2008. Riley, who was won five NBA titles was grooming Spoelstra to take over and bring a winning culture to South Beach.
Coach Spo has lived up to expectations by bringing multiple championships to the city and seen the swagger of his players become both loved and hated by fellow players, the media and fans. Spoelstra has done a great job coaching and his reward should come as no surprise.
Spoelstra is under contract and has added two new assistant coaches for the upcoming season. Former Heat forward Juwan Howard and Dan Craig have been added to the bench. The staff will begin to prepare for its quest to three-peat as training camp begins this week.
