Chris "Birdman" Andersen can celebrate something else while the offseason is winding down. He has officially been cleared of any charges from a case opened in 2012.
Andersen was the target of an investigation related to child pornography by the Colorado Internet Crimes Against Children. The CICAC searched the residence of Andersen back in March 2012 when Andersen was a member of he Denver Nuggets. According to reports, a Canadian woman was discovered to have been using his name when the authorities were alerted to study the online activities of Andersen.
The woman was charged with an array of crimes, which included identity theft, and fraud in her native country and its possible that the State of Colorado could charge her as well.
Birdman had his popularity drop after the public first heard that his name was mixed up in that type of activity. While in Denver, Andersen was known for his energy and tattoos, which made him a fan favorite in his seven year stint with the team. That didn't stop the Sheriff's Department from barging into the home of Andersen to seek out any evidence as part of the investigation going on led by the Colorado Internet Crimes Against Children Unit.
Andersen wanted to plead his innocence from when it all began because he knew he had no involvement. He and his lawyer, Mark Bryant were notified about the exact nature of the case over a month ago. At that time, they also learned that there had been some findings that should shed some light on the case that could allow the authorities to see that there was a mistake.
This case sounded a lot like the case involving former Notre Dame and current San Diego Chargers linebacker, Manti Te'o' who was an alleged victim of an internet hoax. Te'o' believed he was dating a woman online before it was revealed that the three-year online hoax was devised by a male.
Andersen's hoax was a bit more confusing and involved the female suspect sending him messages posing as a woman whom Andersen had only encountered once. Also, the suspect would send messages to the same female acquaintance from Anderson while posing as the NBA player. He was not the only victim as the Canadian woman has been linked to stealing one dozen identities or more.
While this happened to Andersen as a member of the Nuggets, it didn't deter him from getting ready to contribute to a contender in 2013. His presence on the court gave the Miami Heat a great boost of energy along with his defense and not shying away from physical play. Birdman's community and charitable work would have been questioned if he had been involved. He has been cleared of all charges in the case and will look to continue to build on his reputation and popularity in a Heat uniform this upcoming season. There was no doubt from Andersen that the police would have to concluded that he was innocent.
