NFL Commission Roger Goodell announced Thursday morning that one of the three 2014 International Series games will be between the Miami Dolphins and Oakland Raiders. The Dolphins will play their seventh International Game when they head to London to face off against the Oakland Raiders. This will be the Dolphins second international game match up against the Raiders. Considering the Raiders being elected as the home team their traveling fan base should fair similarly to the raucous crowd of a European soccer games.
“With our historically strong following internationally, the Dolphins are proud to once again represent the league abroad as one of the six participants of the 2014 International Series,” stated Miami Dolphins Chairman of the Board/Managing General Partner Stephen M. Ross. “The opportunity to again connect with our many fans overseas and to expose a growing global audience to the sport we all love is something that our entire organization will fully embrace.”
The last time these two teams met outside the United States was in the 1991 International Games set in Tokyo, Japan. The Dolphins won 19-17 in this preseason game. In comparison to a lot of teams Miami has a pretty strong history playing overseas. Back in 2007 they played the New York Giants in the first London International Games. Prior to the commencement of the International Games in the 80s the team competed in six games outside of the United States.
If history repeats itself the Dolphins are likely to collect a “w” for this game. Hopefully it’s a regular season game, so it counts for something. They’re International Series game record currently stands at 5-1.
As with all NFL games whether in the United States or not, fans are sure to flock to show their support. Raider Nation as well as Phin Nation will be in attendance. Raider Nation is known for their relentless fan base through their words, actions and dress. They’re sure to build their own “black hole” section at Wemblay Stadium.
Stay tuned for the official date and time of the Dolphins and Raiders 2014 match up!
