On Wednesday, a list of modern-era nominees for the Pro Football Hall of Fame Class of 2014 was released. The list included three former Miami Dolphins: linebacker, Zach Thomas and defensive backs, Sam Madison and Patrick Surtain. The total list of nominees consists of 16 first year eligible players and 126 players in total.
This morning Sam Madison posted to his Twitter to give his thanks to all those who have supported he and his former teammates over the years.
“I would say good morning. But I'll say great morning to you all. Thank you all for your support. Me @psurtain23 and #ZT54 played hard 4u. 29”
Zach Thomas played for the Miami Dolphins from 1996-2007, until he left to play for the Dallas Cowboys in 2008. Thomas played a total of 184 games. He accounted for an astounding 17 interceptions and over 1700 tackles (the most of any player inducted into the HOF). He was also selected to seven Pro Bowls, named first team All- Pro on five occasions and second–team All Pro twice.
Sam Madison played the majority of his career with the Dolphins as well (1997-2005) and the next two seasons (2006-08) with the New York Giants. During Madison’s tenure he had a career total of 38 interceptions and between 1998-2000 in had 20 pass takeaways. Furthermore, he was voted to the Pro Bowl four times and attained three All-AFC and two All-Pro selections.
Patrick Surtain, similar to Thomas and Madison played with others teams separate from the Dolphins. From 1998-2004 he played for the Miami Dolphins and then from 2005-08 for the Kansas City Chiefs. In his 11-seasons he recorded 37 interceptions. Surtain played consistently well. So much so that he was selected to three consecutive Pro Bowls and was named first-team All Pro in 2002 and 2003.
Before it’s known if some of our favorite Dolphins will be inducted into the 2014 HOF in Canton, Ohio next year, there will be a few cuts made to the list in the meantime. In November, the list will be chopped down to 25 semifinalists. At the start of the New Year in January the list will go down to 15 finalists. Finally, on February 1st, the HOF Class of 2014 will be selected from the 15 finalist and two senior nominees, defensive end, Claude Humphrey and punter Ray Guy. In August, the Hall of Fame’s Senior Selection Committee picked Humphrey and Guy.
Thomas, Madison and Surtain, “May the odds be ever in your favor!”
