Today is the Miami Dolphins’ final preseason game, when they will face the New Orleans Saints at Sun Life Stadium in Miami, Florida. At this point in the preseason the Dolphins have only been able to win one preseason game. To pick up a win tonight would be nice, but not detrimental if they don’t. Nonetheless, Coach Joe Philbin feels his team had good practices this week in preparation for tonight’s game. Let’s check out more of Philbin’s thoughts for tonight’s game and the final 53-man roster, due by this Saturday.
Dion Jordan returned to practice this week. How did he look? What's the plan for him and will he play tonight?
“He looked good. I have to watch the tape a little bit closer, but he moved well. He worked on some of the basic fundamentals and techniques. We’ll see how it looks on tape.”
“We’ll see. I wouldn’t rule anything out.”
Around the league a lot teams played a good chunk of their starters in the 2nd to last game of preseason. With this being the last game of the preseason and non-starters are trying to make the 53-man roster, there's a good chance most starters will sit to avoid injury and give the stage to those fighting for a spot. As of Tuesday, Philbin had yet to decide if starters would play during tonight’s home game against the Saints.
On if play time decisions are based on starters starting tonight’s game and the number of plays they are likely to get.
“Sure, yeah, both. We are going to look at the whole scope of things, and we are going to make a determination who’s going to play and how long. We will have a target number of snaps for the people. Usually we are pretty close to it, but sometimes it’s flexible.”
With the final exhibition week here, is he looking forward to finally starting the regular season?
“We looked at the schedule. We know we have this game. I’m looking forward to this game watching our guys compete against New Orleans Thursday night. There will be a time to get focused on what we are doing next week. We’ll certainly be focused when that time comes.”
His attitude on having certain players on the field in tonight’s game, who he believes could make the final 53-man roster.
“Again, every team has to make decisions that they are comfortable with. Every player’s health and safety is important to us. Anybody who goes out here and practices, anybody who goes out and plays in a game puts themselves at risk of injury. You always weight the risk and the reward, absolutely. We do, as I imagine other teams.”
Stay tuned next week to see who’s “In the Fish Bowl!"
