The Miami Dolphins' team is now nine more players down. By Saturday, 22 more players must go in order to bring the Miami Dolphins’ roster to the league regular season standard of 53 players. Today, eight players were waived and one contract has been terminated. Tomorrow is a new day of competition. Thursday’s contest against the New Orleans Saints is the last preseason game and Saturday the Dolphins’ roster will be complete. Which players will do what it takes to call themselves, Miami Dolphin?
Defensive end Emeka Onyenekwu, fullback Jorvorskie Lane, linebackers: David Hinds, Nathan Williams and Michael Clay and wide receivers, Julius Pruitt, Jeff Fuller and Andrell Smith have all been waived. Guard, Lance Louis had his contract terminated.
According to NFL.com, to be waived is for a non-vested player (“less than four years of service”) to be released from an NFL team, which enables another team to pick him up during a definite period of time. On the other hand if a player has played more than four years (vested veteran) they have the chance to be waived only during the mid-season trading deadline to the end of the football season.
In the case of guard, Lance Louis, his contract with the Dolphins was terminated. ESPN.com helps to separate the meaning of a contract termination and waiver. Here, in the case of Louis being terminated, he becomes a free agent and is now able to sign with any NFL team, without dealing with the waiver process.
Going into this Thursday’s preseason game against the New Orleans Saints, the performance of some players in this game could be a deciding factor of whether they make the team or not.
In regards to playing guys in the preseason game that could be on the 53-man roster, Coach Philbin and his staff will consider two main points.
“Again, every team has to make decisions that they are comfortable with. Every player’s health and safety is important to us. Anybody who goes out here and practices, anybody who goes out and plays in a game puts them self at risk of injury. You always weigh the risk and the reward, absolutely. We do, as I imagine other teams.”
For the sake of the 2013 season, hopefully the reward is greater.
