On Friday, the Miami Dolphins waived five players to bring their roster to 84. The remaining players will continue to battle for the chance to be a Dolphin. Another set of cuts are due next week, so every minute counts. By having only the remainder of this month and two preseason games left to play, time is not on their side.
Wide receiver Kenny Stafford, line backer Alonzo Highsmith, defensive tackle Chris Burnette and guards, Jeff Braun and Chandler Burden were all let go.
By Tuesday at 4pm, the Dolphins will have to make additional cuts to bring their roster down to a maximum of 75 players. All final cuts to put the team at the 53 regular season standard, must be made by Saturday, August 31st.
Earlier in the week, the Dolphins also released cornerback, Richard Marshall. Following his release, Coach Philbin acknowledged the difficulty of making roster moves.
“Decisions like these are never easy. We consider a multitude of factors before we make a decision like this, but we do feel like this decision came at the right time and it’s in the best interest in the football team.”
These cuts are just a part of the game. A player being released from an NFL team doesn’t necessarily signify the end of their playing days. Although, the sooner a decision is made, the more time players have to seek out other opportunities with another team. Then again, with every NFL team making similar cuts, the battle for a spot remains fierce.
