The Memphis Grizzlies selected Janis Timma, a 20-year old small forward from Latvia, with the final pick in Thursday's NBA draft. Timma stands at 6'7'' 226 pounds. Timma will play on the Grizzlies' summer league squad, but he will remain in Europe for the regular season.
Timma beams with potential, but he needs to improve several parts of his game. Offensively, he can score off outside shooting, but he also has the athleticism to attack the rim. Jonathan Givony from DraftExpress.com described Timma to have "A good frame with fluid athleticism" and thinks he has the tools to make an impact down the road. Timma's defense needs the most work. He looks unengaged at times. However, his frame should allow him to become a good defender if he puts forth the necessary effort. And one would imagine Tony Allen would get him to give the effort need should Timma make it to FedExForum.
These European picks are always toss ups. Who knows if Timma will ever play a game in a Grizzly uniform. Time will tell, but the pick was worth based on his sheer upside.
