Manchester United stars Romelu Lukaku and Marcus Rashford can change Mourinho’s ways

Manchester United have a long history of strikers filling their boots in a 4-4-2 – but it has never really been Jose Mourinho’s way.

The Portuguese changed the culture of English football when he brought the 4-3-3 to the Premier League in 2004, giving his Chelsea side an extra man in midfield at the expense of a striker.

As other clubs began to catch up with Chelsea, after their back-to-back title wins in 2005 and 2006, Mourinho looked to add another tactical dimension.

Andriy Shevchenko, at a club record £30m, was seen as central to that.

Having occasionally paired Hernan Crespo and Didier Drogba together in a 4-4-2 diamond, Mourinho looked to do the same with Shevchenko on a more regular basis.

In a rare move in his long history of big-money signings, Mourinho was even there when the Ukrainian signed his showpiece contract.

Shevchenko scored just 14 goals in his first season at Chelsea

Mourinho went as far to say as ‘today is a day when the dream became reality – Andriy has always been my first-choice for Chelsea’.

Given the millions of words that have been written about the pair’s relationship since then, that promising start is often forgotten.
