Nick Young has never been shy about shooting the basketball, and he may have finally found his place to shine, and shoot. A depleted Los Angeles Lakers team will take all the help they can get from the man that calls himself “Swaggy P.”
In a league where “tanking” is usually considered a smart strategic move, the Lakers have done just the opposite. Behind Young’s strong scoring output the Lakers have been very competitive since an embarrassing loss to the Los Angeles Clippers back on January 10th. Since then the Lakers have lost by more than two points only once and have two road wins. One of those wins came over a tough Toronto Raptors team that has been blowing opponents out at home.
The Lakers had tough losses by two against the Cleveland Cavaliers, and in overtime to the Chicago Bulls. Young was great against the Bulls, sinking three clutch free throws at the end of regulation to send the game to overtime, and hitting a big shot in overtime that tied the game at 100. The Lakers ultimately lost a tough one when Taj Gibson laid the ball in to beat the buzzer and give the Bulls the win, but the young Lakers are certainly progressing. Young finished the game with 31 points, which was the first time a Laker has cracked the 30 point mark this season.
With Kobe Bryant out, there is a definite need for Young to be a top scorer on the team – a role he has shown that he can fill when he gets the minutes. Now that Young has established his role on the team his stats have jumped up to the levels that his talent has always suggested he can produce at. Young is really starting to hit his stride, and is averaging 24 points per game over his last four with the Lakers, winning two of those four contests.
Young has also informed the Lakers he would like to rap the national anthem before a game and joked to reporters “I plan on being a model later on in life.” “Swaggy P” certainly doesn’t lack any confidence, and it’s showing on, and off the court for the Lakers.
