After losing 2-0 to the Philadelphia Flyers on Saturday February 1, Los Angeles Kings coaches, players and alumni headed to the Even Deck at LA Live for Tip-A-King 2014. Tip-A-King is a fundraiser benefiting the Kings Care Foundation.
It was the first time at this particular venue and despite non-camera friendly lighting and loud music, the event was a success raising $275,000 to contribute to healthy educational and recreational opportunities for children and families in the Los Angeles area. The last Tip-A-King was on November 13, 2011 at Sony Pictures Studios, raising $200,000. There was no event in the 2012-13 season due to the NHL lockout.
Due to the recent losses the Kings faced, fans feared that the team would not be in a good mood, but it was quite the opposite. Everyone was in a positive mood and looking ready for a good time as they conversed, laughed, and interacted with the fans.
The way the event works is fans give them “tips” (cash turned into Tip-A-Kings dollars) for an autograph and a picture, and can engage in the activity assigned to the player, coach or alumni. The activities this year included; say cheese, photo booth, five for fighting flip book, Willie you be my valentine?, personalized player card, key chain, accuracy challenge, take a shot on goal, you stop the puck, enjoy a day at the races, win the water races, NHL14 on XBOX, putting challenge, corn hole toss, air hockey, raffle wheel, you’re the TV broadcaster, you’re the radio announcer, you are the head coach and mix and mingle.
Kings Care Foundation was created in 1996, by Kings alumni and television color commentator Jim Fox, and has donated nearly $6 million in monetary and in-kind support to the local community. The team is very involved and donates money, tickets and etc; to help raise money for the foundation throughout the year.
Some recipients of Kings Care donations include: Ronald McDonald House, Children’s Hospital Los Angeles, Boys and Girls Club of America, City Year Los Angeles, Reading is Fundamental and Cystic Fibrosis Foundation.
