Kings goaltender Martin Jones gave another phenomenal performance, saving 29 shots. In his young career Jones has a .955 Save percentage, a 1.29 Goals Against Average, and Three Shutouts. Unfortunately he recorded his second straight loss (8-2-0) after tying the record for best-career NHL start.
Despite Jones stopping back to back shots, at 7:05 in the first period the Blackhawks got the one and only goal of the night form Brandon Saad.
The Kings defense did kill two penalties alongside being very physical throughout the game. They logged 45 hits in which 19 were in the first period, one from previous Blackhawk Colin Fraser that sent Blackhawks defenseman Michal Rozsival over the boards between the benches, and it was only 10-minutes into the game.
The Kings offense created opportunities outshooting the Blackhawks in the second period 15-11 and Kings captain Dustin Brown was awarded a penalty shot for being hooked on a breakaway by Brent Seabrook, but was unable to score.
The entire team played some of their very best hockey, but they just couldn’t get the puck past the Blackhawks rookie goaltender Antti Raanta who gained his first career shutout against the Kings. This was the Kings second shutout of the season so far.
The third period was mostly spent in the Kings zone but Jones made some sensational saves to keep the Blackhawks from scoring another goal.
This is the Kings season high third loss in a row. At 54 points the Kings are now 29-11-4, third place in the Pacific Division, fifth in the Western Conference, and seventh in the League.
The Kings continue their four-game road trip, stopping in Dallas for the first and last time this season to end their series with the Dallas Stars on Tuesday December 31 at American Airlines Center, 5:00 p.m.
