Coach Darryl Sutter pulled a fast one, having Ben Scrivens lead the team onto the ice in the warm-ups, which typically means he would be starting, but Martin Jones took the net instead, getting his first career NHL shutout, in his second NHL game as the Los Angeles Kings beat the New York Islanders 3-0 at STAPLES Center on Saturday.

The young goaltender has won both of his first two career NHL starts, stopping all 16 of the Islanders shots and stopping 42 of a combined 44 shots he faced against the Islanders on Saturday and the Anaheim Ducks on Wednesday.

The power play for the Kings continues to struggle as they couldn’t execute on any of their five-man advantages. However, the penalty kill continues to strive as they killed four against the Islanders and 46 out of the last 49.

The first period was scoreless but at 12:08 in the second, Anze Kopitar put the Kings on the board with a snap shot assisted by Alec Martinez.

At 10:37 in the third period, Kings captain Dustin Brown got a wrap-around goal assisted by Jarret Stoll and Justin Williams. And finally at 18:56, Tyler Toffoli got an empty netter, assisted by Mike Richards and Drew Doughty.

Before the start of the game the Kings honored Larry Murphy, in the second Legends Night of the season, as the team wore the old “Purple and Gold” or “Forum Blue and Gold” era jerseys.

The Kings are now 19-7-4, with 42 points. The Kings now stand in third in the Pacific Division, fourth in the Western Conference, and fourth in the League.

The Kings will travel to Montreal to take on the Montreal Canadiens on Tuesday, December 10 at 4:00 p.m.
