Former Los Angeles Kings player, Dustin Penner was knocked briefly unconscious by Dallas Stars left wing Ryan Garbutt, who has been summoned to the NHL Department of Player Safety (NHLDPS) for an in-person hearing, the NHL announced Monday.
Penner did not make the Ducks' flight to Toronto on Monday, where an eight-game road trip begins Tuesday. The team announced that he stayed behind in Orange County to undergo further tests and evaluation.
Garbutt may be suspended for more than five games due to the league invoking the in-person hearing, as required by the collective-bargaining agreement with players.
Per a memo issued by the NHLDPS, “At approximately 5:28 of the second period, Garbutt hit Ducks forward Dustin Penner as Penner released a shot in the Dallas zone. There was no penalty called. Penner was helped to the dressing room and did not return…The following grounds are being considered for supplemental discipline: charging and illegal check to the head.”
Here is a video of the play where the hit occured.
Some Ducks players believe Garbutt launched specifically at Penner. Penner laid motionless for seconds, then was joined by trainer Joe Huff. Soon after he stood and walked unstably with the support of his teammates Corey Perry and Ryan Getzlaf to the dressing room.
The Ducks informed media members, during the third period, that Penner was knocked out briefly and was under evaluation, but he had full mobility and was walking under his own power.
Following the game, Penner went to twitter, responding to fans who shared their opinions of the incident. Some fans unfortunately had outrageous comments and Penner rapidly fired back with his sharp-wit.
