With 53 seconds left on the clock during regulation on Thursday’s opening night, Minnesota Wilds, Matt Cooke was in front of the net as the puck spritzed to him, during the moment Los Angeles Kings goaltender Jonathan Quick was out of position, but center Trevor Lewis, playing without a stick, was able to stop Cooke’s ’ shot, sending the game to overtime, and eventually a shootout, where the Kings won the game 3-2.
During the first period, the first goal came from Minnesota’s Matt Crooke. At 7:40 Drew Doughty got a power play goal assisted by Slava Voynov and Anze Kopitar. At 17: 12 came Minnesota’s second goal from Jonas Brodin, ending the period in their favor 2-1.
The second period was scoreless.
During the third period at 13:14 Jeff Carter went for the game tying goal, assisted by Matt Frattin and Robyn Regehr.
Overtime was scoreless as well, leading to the shootout where the Kings won it.
During the shootout, Quick (who stopped 27 shots during the game) stopped Minnesota’s first shooter Zach Parise, Kopitar scored a goal, Minnesota’s Mikko Koivu’s shot was stopped as well, and Jeff Carter put the game to rest with a goal.
The Kings play again on the road on Friday October 4, at 5:00 p.m. against the Winnipeg Jets.
