The National Hockey League hosted a news conference on Thursday for its outdoor game at Dodger Stadium. League officials, Dodgers management, representatives from the Los Angeles Kings, Kings players Jeff Carter and Drew Doughty, and Anaheim Ducks players Dustin Penner and Emerson Etem were in attendance.

The Kings and Ducks will face off as part of the NHL Stadium Series. The NHL is expanding its outdoor games so that there’s more than the once-a-year Winter Classic in an American city, and Heritage Classic in a Canadian city.

Designs were unveiled for the game which will be held on January 25, 2014. The ice rink will sit beyond the first and third base in the area of the infield dirt. The Dodgers are happy to host the first NHL regular season game west of Mississippi.

Stadium Series events will take place at New York's Yankee Stadium and Chicago's Soldier Field as well but Los Angeles will be the first warm-weather city to host a regular season outdoor game.

During the conference, Commissioner Gary Bettman praised California's growing hockey programs. He said that youth hockey registrations are at an all-time high. According to USA Hockey, California ranks 7th in total hockey players.
