The Los Angeles Kings will raise their Stanley Cup banner and receive their championship rings on October 12, and it will do so against one of the premier teams in the league in a matchup of perhaps the NHL's two best goaltenders.
The NHL released its schedule for the upcoming season, which opens on October 11 with four games; the Boston Bruins at the Philadelphia Flyers, the St. Louis Blues at the Colorado Avalanche, Vancouver at Calgary and Ottowa at Montreal. NBC Sports Network will televise the Bruins-Flyers matchup as well at the Blues-Avalanche game that night.
NBCSN will also televise the Kings-Rangers game a night later, and it will be a doozy. Aside from the Kings raising the banner and receiving their rings, the game will also highlight two of the best goaltenders in the league, as LA's Jonathan Quick will match wits with the New York Rangers' Henrik Lundqvist. There could also be some added motivation for Quick to get the best of Lundqvist on that night after coming up short for the Vezina Trophy this past year and perhaps kick start his own campaign for the coveted goaltender award in 2012-13.
Following the season opener, the Kings will spend the next four days in Alberta with back-to-back games against Calgary on the 15th and Edmonton on the 16th. Aside from those two games as well as an October 30 date at St. Louis, the Kings will be spending most of October at home, with the big stretch coming from October 18-27, when the Kings will be playing four straight home games. The Kings' Stanley Cup Final rematch against the New Jersey Devils will take place on February 9 at the Prudential Center.
