The dream lives on.
The Kansas City Chiefs undefeated season continued Sunday as the team defeated the Oakland Raiders by a score of 24-7 in front of a packed sea of red at Arrowhead Stadium. Not only were the Chiefs trying to stay unbeaten but the fans of Arrowhead had a mission themselves going into Sunday. The Guinness Book of World Records were in attendance to see if Arrowhead Stadium could outlast the record set forth by the Seattle crowd at CenturyLink Field. And they did just that as the previous record of 136.6 decibels was surpassed today by the 137.5 decibels set today by Chiefs Nation.
Joining in with the crowd noise, this Chiefs defense continued to make more noise themselves in 2013. Today this unit racked up ten sacks (10!) on Raiders QB Terrelle Pryor while adding three interceptions, one which was returned for a touchdown by Husain Abdullah. There's no doubt how far and how fierce this group has become. Pro Bowl linebackers, an improved d-line, and a secondary full of guys who are just making plays. CB Marcus Cooper just might be the best move General Manager John Dorsey has made by acquiring him at the waiver wire before the regular season. Cooper has been all over the field every week and he added another interception today. At 6'1, he certainly matches up well with the bigger receivers in the league and there's no question defensive coordinator Bob Sutton will keep this kid on the field.
Linebackers Tamba Hali and Derrick Johnson, well, they played like Tamba Hali and Derrick Johnson. Hali added 3.5 sacks to his stat sheet and DJ recorded two sacks of his own, leading the team with nine total tackles, and two QB hits. These two remain the heart and soul of a defense that is one of the best in the National Football League.
Now let's roll over to the other side of the ball. It's clear that head coach Andy Reid and QB Alex Smith have a lot of work to do. This offense continued to struggle all day, although against a solid Oakland defense, but if the Chiefs want to keep up with Peyton Manning and the high-scoring Denver Broncos offense they will need to score points. Smith's numbers today were ugly, completing only 14 of 31 passes for 128 yards with no touchdowns. He does not turn the ball over which is always crucial but there are multiple times in the game where Smith is reluctant to pull the trigger. Whether this has something to do with his weapons or not, we'll find out if Reid and Dorsey do something to try to get this offense going (cough cough Tony G cough).
But as long as the Chiefs keep feeding Jamaal Charles the rock, they'll be ok. Sometimes coach Reid might get away from the running game more so than he should but he is 6-0 so we won't criticize his ability to coach. But there is no question this offense needs work and needs to improve as we approach the half way point of the season and move forward towards the second half.
But your Kansas City Chiefs are 6-0 (6-0!) and are doing it like they did it in the '90s: A relentless defense from top to bottom, a strong running game when needed, turnovers, and not turning it over themselves. Keep up with that formula and more good things will happen for the boys in red.
Next up: 10/20 vs. Houston Texans – 3:25pmCDT @ Arrowhead Stadium.
