The dream season continues for the Kansas City Chiefs as they remained unbeaten Sunday against the New York Giants to improve to 4-0. Only one other team has started a season 4-0 after winning just two games a year ago, Detroit in 1980, and the coaching staff has a lot to do with that. QB Alex Smith has led this group with leadership and before yesterday, was turnover-free during the first three games. Smith threw his first two interceptions of the season but once again the Chiefs stout defense rose to the occasion again, stuffing the GMEN all day aside from one big play.
"To be honest, all we talked about all offseason was being 1-0," said Smith. "Just get the first one."
When asked if he ever thought his new team would start 4-0 Smith responded "No, to answer your question." Not only are they tied for first in the AFC West, but arguably could be in first in the NFC East, going 3-0 against that division so far. The Chiefs have been doing it in all three phases of the game, yesterday getting a big boost from the special teams.
After a not so exciting first half that had the Chiefs clinging to a 10-7 lead, Dexter McCluster came up with the spark that would eventually lead to the win. Late in the 3rd quarter after a big challenge by Andy Reid to contest a first down that was overturned to make it a 4th and one, the Giants punted to McCluster who showed off his swift moves that he brought from his Ole Miss days. #22 weaved through the defenders and with great blocking took it to the house for an 89-yard return to give the boys in red a 17-7 lead that they would only build on.
The defense didn't allow Eli Manning's offense to get going and aside from the big play to Victor Cruz for a score, the Giants couldn't muster up anything offensively all afternoon. In the 4th quarter, the Chiefs offense marched down the field on a 14-play, 80 yard drive that ended with a 2-yard pass from Alex Smith to Jamaal Charles to open it up at 24-7. Then to top it off, Smith connected on a 34-yard dart to WR Dwayne Bowe for Smith's third touchdown pass of the game and finishing with 288 yards in the air.
But this was another game for the Chiefs that saw major contributions from all three facets of the game. The offense stalled a number of times in the first half but with this stellar defense stuffing the run and covering well in the backfield, this team will be in almost every game. Then one spark from the special teams and it was enough to propel the Chiefs to their fourth straight win in as many games.
LB Tamba Hali was himself once again, recording two sacks on the day along with Allen Bailey who registered one as well. Quintin Demps had an interception of Eli Manning after Manning lobbed one up in the middle of the field with no receiver in sight. LB Derrick Johnson was in the Giants backfield all afternoon stuffing the run and leading the team with nine tackles.
It was another pleasing afternoon at Arrowhead Stadium as the Chiefs haven't gone this long into a season without a loss since 2003, when that team started 9-0. To say this team has turned it around after one season would be an understatement, but even at this point the motto is 4-0 with room to grow. The season is still young but the Chiefs with its tremendous coaching staff have become believers again as the mentality remains one-game at a time.
