Consistently staring third downs in its face from the San Diego Chargers offense, the Indianapolis Colts summed up its night by being unable to get itself off the field.
The Chargers outgained the Colts 374-267 and held a 72-47 advantage in total offensive plays run, as it defeated Indianapolis 19-9, Monday, Oct. 14, at Qualcomm Stadium.
San Diego was 7-14 on third down for the game. Ryan Mathews led the way for the Chargers on the ground, carrying 22 times for 102 yards, the third 100-yard rushing performance Indianapolis has surrendered in the past two weeks.
On the other side of the ball, the Colts struggled to keep drives alive, converting twice on 10 third down attempts and held the ball for 17 fewer minutes. Andrew Luck completed 18-of-30 passes for 202 yards and a late game interception, but also had five passes dropped by his receiving targets.
Reggie Wayne hauled in five receptions for 88 yards, and became the ninth player in NFL history to reach 1,000 career receptions. He moved into eighth place on the all-time receptions list, moving past Hines Ward at 1,001 catches.
Field goals were the name of the game as far as scoring went, with the lone touchdown coming on Phillip Rivers pass to Keenan Allen in the second quarter. Nick Novak kicked four field goals, capping the night off with a 50-yarder with under two minutes remaining to push the Chargers lead to 10.
Adam Vinatieri provided all the of Colts scoring, with field goals from 30, 50 and 51 yards, respectively.
Jerrell Freeman left the game for the Colts late in the first half and did not return.
Indianapolis next hosts the Denver Broncos at 8 p.m., Sunday, Oct. 20, at Lucas Oil Stadium.
